Expressionism

Tobiasse was born in Jaffa (Israel) in 1927. He works and died the 3 november 2012 in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France.
Very young he leaves Jaffa with his family for Kouno (Lithuania) and after a time, when aged six, his parents decide to settie down in Paris.Theo Tobiasse created his earliest drawings before World War II.
He studies till the German occupation and frequents Mont-martre quarter where he likes to draw. During a few months he takes courses in the school des , Arts décoratifs ", and obliged to wear the , yellow star ", he lives hidden until the end of the war.
Then he works for publicity agencies, makes tapestry canvass and creates displays for important shops of the , Faubourg St. Honoré " in Paris.
Settled in Nice in 1950, it is only in 1965, aged 35, that he decides to devote himself entirely to painting and sculpture. The success comes fast with the price of , The Young Mediterranean Painting " and an exhibition in Gallery Drouant in Paris.
Passionately fond of reading, Tobiasse finds his inspiration in poetry, Mythological, Jewish and Biblical narration's. Tobiasse's style of painting is highly sophisticated. His technique is a painterly blend of surrealism, expressionism, and modern primitivism. His themes are literary, often biblical, and at times, erotic. His paintings seem to transcend history - fusing dreams, mythologies, biblical stories and his own past - into rich metaphors for the world of the present.
He orderly participates to collective exhibitions of a high level (Biennales de Paris et Menton, Salon des Peintres témoins de leur temps...) and his works can be found in important museums and collections in France, as well as overseas (Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Londres, Tel Aviv, Caracas, Montreal...
